After raging success, the highly-anticipated Red Sea Film Festival is back for its fourth edition. The festival aims to bring together the region’s audiences in an appreciation of raw talent.

It is set to start on December 5 and will take place until December 14. It is hosted in  Jeddah’s old town, Al Balad. S,o what are some of the movies vying for everyone’s attention?

    To A Land Unknown

To A Land Unknown is a skillful blend of documentary and fiction that sheds light on the harsh reality of a life in refuge. The movie is directed by Palestinian Mehdi Fleifel, who is known for his award-winning documentary “A World Not Ours,” which also dealt with the themes of exile and refuge.

To A Land Unknown brings together Mahmoud Bakri and Aram Sabbah as two Palestinian cousins in their turbulent journey to Germany, where they get involved in schemes of drugs and scams. It depicts the dichotomy of evil and kindness that the world holds and will leave you in tears as the lines between right and wrong blur.

Essam Omar, known for his hilarious role in the Balto series, is back for the movie Seeking Haven for Mr. Rambo. The movie, directed by Khaled Mansour, was screened at the Venice Film Festival 2024 . The movie tells the story of Hassan, who is threatened with eviction by his landlord and seeks a home for both himself and his dog.

Seeking Haven for Mr. Rambo is a story of finding sanctuary in a society that pushes you away once and again. In Mansour words’ it depicts “a relationship where we often feel like stray dogs chased through the city, yet unable to find any other place to belong.”

The movie tells the tale of Daye, a 14-year-old Nubian albino. Daye is a talented singer, and he travels with his family from Aswan to Cairo, seeking his big break through The Voice. The family’s road trip is full of twists and turns, featuring a memorable encounter with Daye’s muse, Mohamed Mounir.

While Daye’s voice will give you goosebumps, his journey of resilience will touch you to your core.

    Aicha

Aicha was awarded Best Mediterranean Film from the Academy of Fine Arts at this year’s Venice Film Festival. The movie is directed by award winning Mehdi M. Barsaoui and features Fatma Sfar and Nidhal Saadi.

The Tunisian main character, Aya, meets a fork in the road when she is presumed dead in a bus crash. She decides to discard her old identity and her old village life and goes by Amira. It is a tale of deception and self-reimagining.
