The International Court of Justice announced in a press release that Lebanese Judge Nawaf Salam of Lebanon has been chosen by his fellow judges to serve as the new President of the court.
Salam is set to become the 27th President of the International Court of Justice, set to serve a term of three years.
Who Is Nawaf Salam?
Born in Beirut on December 15th, 1953, Nawaf has served as a judge, diplomat, and lecturer on political science and international law.
He holds a doctorate in political science from the Institut d’Études Politiques de Paris, a Master of Laws from Harvard Law School, and a doctorate in history from Sorbonne University, to name a few of his degrees and accolades.
He’s also married to Sahar Baassiri, Lebanon’s Ambassador to UNESCO.
Why Is He Leading News?
Nawaf was appointed the President of the International Court of Justice in the middle of the ongoing South African genocide lawsuit against Israel.
He’s already receiving hate from Israeli media for his open criticism of the occupation.
Despite the campaign, he’s going to be presiding over the ongoing case against Israel.

It’s worth noting that Nawaf Salam has served as Lebanon’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York from 2007 to 2017 and as acting President of the General Assembly of the United Nations in July 2013, where he has relentlessly advocated for peace in the South of Lebanon and for economic and political reform in this home country.
