Dubai is poised to revolutionize urban living with the launch of the Dubai Walk master plan, a visionary project aimed at transforming the emirate into a pedestrian-friendly metropolis.

Announced by Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, this groundbreaking initiative promises to boost walkability, connectivity, and green spaces throughout the city, setting a new standard for modern urban design.

    A Comprehensive Network of Walkways

The Dubai Walk initiative aims to build an impressive 6,500 km network of pedestrian pathways across 160 areas in the city. This ambitious project includes the creation of 3,300 km of new walkways and the revitalization of 2,300 km of existing ones, all scheduled to be completed by 2040.

Beyond that, more than 900 km of additional pathways are planned. This network will connect some of Dubai’s most iconic landmarks, from the Burj Khalifa and Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) to Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Lakes Towers, making it easier than ever to navigate the city on foot.

Enhancing Connectivity with Bridges and Underpasses

Integral to the Dubai Walk master plan is the inclusion of 110 pedestrian bridges and underpasses that will improve connectivity between key areas. These bridges and pathways are designed with both daily commuters and tourists in mind, allowing seamless travel between the city’s major sites without the need for cars.

This strategic infrastructure will make exploring Dubai more accessible and enjoyable.

    Green Spaces and Modern Amenities

The project doesn’t stop at walkways; it aims to create vibrant and sustainable public spaces. New paths will be lined with lush greenery, shaded seating areas, and misting systems to provide a cooling retreat from the city’s heat.

Interactive digital screens, art installations, sports and entertainment facilities, rest zones, and commercial spaces will further elevate the pedestrian experience, blending convenience with a touch of luxury.

Aligning with Dubai’s 2040 Urban Vision

The Dubai Walk master plan is a cornerstone of the city’s 2040 Urban Master Plan, which envisions a “20-minute city” where residents can access essential services and key destinations within a 20-minute walk or cycle.

By increasing pedestrian and soft mobility from the current 13 percent to 25 percent by 2040, Dubai is fostering healthier lifestyles and reducing its carbon footprint—aligning with its commitment to sustainability and modern urban living.

The Future Loop: A Key Component

One of the most exciting elements of the Dubai Walk plan is the “Future Loop,” a 2-km elevated bridge that will link prominent sites such as the Dubai World Trade Centre, the Museum of the Future, Emirates Towers, DIFC, and nearby metro stations.

This innovative feature not only strengthens connectivity but also integrates transportation hubs with pedestrian routes, streamlining commutes and enriching the city’s urban landscape.

    A Phased Implementation

The rollout of the master plan will be carried out in three phases, ensuring a thoughtful approach to growth and adaptability. The pilot phase is slated for 2025 to 2027, with full-scale implementation from 2027 to 2040.

This phased approach allows Dubai to gather feedback and make necessary adjustments, optimizing the infrastructure to meet the evolving needs of its residents.
