The UAE has unveiled a cutting-edge virtual-reality experience designed to help caregivers, educators, and parents understand the sensory challenges faced by individuals with autism.
Known as the Autism Reality Experience, this initiative was recently introduced at the Zayed Higher Organisation for People of Determination in Abu Dhabi.
Developed by UK-based Training 2 Care, the simulation offers participants a glimpse into the overwhelming world of sensory overload experienced by people with autism.
Immersive Experience Brings Autism’s Challenges to Life
The Autism Reality Experience places participants in a dark room where they must navigate various sensory challenges. Participants wear vision-distorting glasses, thick gloves that limit their dexterity, and headphones playing amplified sounds like ticking clocks and dripping water.
These sensory elements are paired with fragrances in the air to create a truly immersive experience.
While performing seemingly simple tasks—such as writing on sticky notes or inserting coins into a piggy bank—participants encounter the sensory overload that individuals with autism often endure daily.
Innovating Autism Awareness Practices
Andy Faulkner, CEO of Topland, expressed pride in collaborating with the Zayed Higher Organisation to launch an interactive showroom that highlights the latest technologies designed to assist People of Determination in their daily tasks.
He noted that the showroom would provide individuals and businesses with an opportunity to explore and understand how to benefit from these technologies.
Faulkner also mentioned that immersive virtual reality and autism experiences are the first of their kind to be introduced in the Middle East and only the second in the world.
Its creators have plans to expand its reach further by developing a mobile version housed in a van, ensuring accessibility to more communities across the country.
