There is an animal rights crisis on our hands, and we are all to blame. On the streets, each day, cats and dogs are abused in the thousands, and what do we do about it? Well, practically nothing. We go about our days, fixated on our own problems, but has anyone stopped to think about the agony of these animals?
Not all of us are staying idle; there are many animal shelters in Egypt that are in need of great help. Each month these heroes rescue countless dogs and cats off the streets, treat them, and then offer them for adoption. Many of them are also engaged in raising awareness all over our country, yet it is not enough. Every once in a while, they find themselves short on cash, food, and medicine, and it breaks their hearts.
Well, if you want to help, all the shelters on this list are doing an amazing job, and all of them are struggling in a way or another. So, if you want to do something about this issue, just go to any of them and donate whatever you can, money, food, or even emotional support.
Unleashed Rescue for Stray Dogs in Egypt
Unleashed Rescue for Stray Dogs in Egypt is a non-profit stray dog rescue organization that has more than 50 rescued dogs under its care. The shelter operates primarily on donations and often a lot, the team posts about donation campaigns for medication or food for the lovely dogs they have there.
The shelter’s mission is to care for these often forgotten animals and one day release them into a world that is not cruel to them.
Egyptian Society for Mercy to Animals (ESMA)
Founded in late 2007, the Egyptian Society for Mercy to Animals (ESMA) is one of the leading organizations that actively work to enhance the welfare of animals all across Egypt. The efforts are not only limited to stray animals such as cats and dogs but it also extends to working animals including donkeys, horses, and camels as well as the wildlife located at the Giza Zoo.
According to its website, ESMA operates two no-kill shelters and adoption centers in Egypt and is also involved in campaigns, initiatives, and advocacy activities to promote animal rights issues in Egypt. Donate here!
HOPE – Egyptian Baladi Rescue and Rehabilitation
Founded in 2015, HOPE is an Egyptian Baladi Rescue and rehabilitation non-profit organization that provides a network of on grounds rescuers, generous sponsors, and medical professionals to help rescue mistreated stray animals in Egypt.
Cairo Animal Rescue Team (CART)
With a responsibility of more than 600 animals, the Cairo Animal Rescue Team (CART) is by far one of the biggest stray shelters in all of Egypt. The non-profit organization has its own animal rescue team, an animal ambulance, and a veterinary hospital to provide all help possible to the rescued strays.
Society for the Protection of Animal Rights (S.P.A.R.E)
Perhaps the oldest animal shelter in all of Egypt, the Society for the Protection of Animal Rights in Egypt (SPARE) is a non-profit charity organization for the protection of animals. The folk at the shelter work tirelessly to promote animal welfare either through awareness campaigns or rescuing animals in need.
Update: S.P.A.R.E. is now self-sufficient and is no longer accepting donations.
Pet Garden
One shelter that is in need of help is Pet Garden; the Abu Sir property houses more than 100 dogs and 60 cats, and each month the team there struggles with low food rations and medicine.
Animal Protection Foundation
Animal Protection Foundation (APF) is a non-profit charitable organization that rescues abused and special needs dogs from Cairo’s streets. The shelter often posts about their financial struggles as each month they deal with food and medicine shortages.
The APF message is to promote animal welfare in all of Egypt; their efforts include raising awareness among children and fight against puppy mills and other exploitative breeding programs. Donate here!
