Ever since TikToker Jools Lebron shared a viral video where she described herself as “very demure, very mindful” while donning workplace-friendly makeup and clothing, it transformed into a viral phenomenon. The entire world hopped onto the “demure” buzzword bandwagon and recreated the trend.
For a fun twist, we also wanted to hop on to it by showcasing the very essence of demureness, classic old-school Egyptian actresses showing pure grace on the screen:
Faten Hamama
Known as the “Lady of the Arabic Screen,” Faten Hamama is the Egyptian actress whose victory in a beauty contest ended up inspiring a cinematic career spanning over 100 films.
With her career stemming from beauty and grace, she continued to channel that quality in all her films, especially her iconic role in “Sayidat Al Kasr,” playing a humble woman who lost her parents at a young age and ended up marrying a rich man called Adel.
Mariam Fakhr Eddine
Along with Hamama, another iconic name you must have heard of is Mariam Fakhr Eddine. Throughout her career, she embodied the role of a sweet, romantic, innocent, good-natured girl on the silver screen of the 1950s.
Just as with Hamama, she embodies style and grace, as beyond her film roles, she participated in “the most beautiful face” contest organized by Image, a French-language magazine.
Zubaida Tharwat
Exemplifying the definition of beauty and grace, Zubaida Tharwat is known as a beauty icon as back when she was a teenager, she won a contest for an Egyptian teen magazine which widely published her photograph.
That is what got the attention of directors and producers and got her starring in 40 movies in only 20 years. In most of her roles, she portrayed characters of utter grace, poise, and elegance, making her the ultimate symbol of demureness.
Magda el-Sabahi
Al Ahram called her “A Golden Age Face” as she was one of the many actresses who defined golden age cinema. Magda el-Sabahi took over the screen and starred in lead roles in more than 60 films under her stage name, Madga, between 1949 and 1969.
When you watch her on the screen, you’ll feel like you are watching a sophisticated and elegant lady with a gentle voice and piercing eyes who knows how to grab your attention with her unequivocal beauty. What could be more demure than that?
Leila Mourad
You can’t discuss demure Egyptian actresses without mentioning the legendary and iconic Leila Mouard. She was the actress who is considered the first box office star after she acted in Long Live Love back in 1938.

Zahrat El-Ola
El Ola was a prominent actress from the golden age of cinema. Sharing the screen with renowned actors of the generation, including Wahby, Tulaimat, and icon of Egyptian comedy Ismail Yassin, El-Ola always presented herself in a poised and elegant manner, a true symbol of demureness and beauty for generations to come.
Lobna Abdel Aziz
Known as the “University Girl,” Lobna Abdel Aziz graduated from the American University in Cairo and even acted on its stage many times. She epitomizes intelligence and cultural prowess as her talent stretched from the cinema, where she starred in over 15 films, all the way to journalism, having authored many articles in the Al Ahram newspaper.
Add to that her major presence in radio, she truly does it all and does it with the same poise, grace and beauty we know and love her for.
