The autumnal times are one of our favorites in the UK, as the hot, often uncomfortable weather of summer comes to an end, and the autumnal colors start to take over the trees and plants, while also remaining mild.

However, we do also start to think about winter and the dark nights, while it does get darker earlier too, putting many hobbies that we have over summer on the back burner. That can be a tricky period for many, particularly those who suffer with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety and even addiction, seeking help from an addiction treatment centre. What’s important, and what professionals will tell you is important, is to maintain healthy activities to avoid temptation and turn to more problematic coping mechanisms, particularly in the case of addiction.

But what are the best autumnal hobbies and activities to take up over the coming months?

    Walking in Nature

Of course, we often get out walking in the spring and summer, but it’s also perfect for the autumn. The cooler temperatures make it a more comfortable activity, while there’s something really beautiful about seeing nature changing around us.

Walking in nature has been proven to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, boost mood and being present in the moment, appreciating the leaves as they turn red and brown. Whether you’re walking with friends or going solo, spending an early evening, lunch time or weekends, walking in nature is idyllic.

    Mindful Photography

Following a similar theme, the change that autumn brings not only in color but light is ideal for exploring and getting creative around. Mindful photography can be so good in slowing down, forgetting our worries and being present in the moment. That’s because by using our cameras to focus on our environment we can enter a mindfulness-like state and improve our mood.

You don’t need a fancy camera, smartphones can do plenty for us these days, while capturing the magic and beauty of autumn can create a real sense of accomplishment and joy.

    Gardening and Planting Bulbs

Autumn is the perfect time to start thinking about your garden for next year. While the weather’s still warm enough, it’s time to start preparing for spring, by planting bulbs and generally tidying after the summer months.

You can really connect with nature and the earth, while also creating a real sense of purpose. What’s more, the act of digging, planting and nurturing plants is really good for reducing stress and boosting calm; giving you the ultimate benefits of spring. Not only is this something to look forward to, but a blooming garden can have a real positive impact on our mental health.

    Seasonal Cooking and Baking

Maximising seasonal produce can be a great way to ease stress during the autumn and throwing yourself into cooking and baking will not only provide you with stress relief during the process of making food, but you’ll also gain the benefits of a balanced diet and a sense of achievement when it actually tastes good!

The scents and flavors of autumn can be incredibly comforting. Think about the likes of cinnamon, apples and pumpkins. They can all create happy, hearty dishes and have a real impact on our mental health.

    Reading by the Fire

As the days shorten and the nights grow cooler, there’s nothing quite as comforting as curling up with a good book by the fire. Reading is a wonderful way to escape the stresses of everyday life and immerse yourself in another world. It can reduce stress, improve cognitive function, and provide a sense of relaxation.

Whether it’s fiction, poetry, or a favorite classic, reading allows you to slow down and enjoy some quiet, reflective time.
