The award acknowledges institutions that make exceptional efforts to integrate sustainability into their operations and culture. It’s not just about reducing waste or conserving energy; it’s a holistic approach that empowers the entire campus community to actively contribute to environmental goals.
CMU-Q’s Path to Sustainability Excellence
For CMU-Q, earning the Green Flag means the campus has met strict environmental standards and embraced the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These guidelines range from tackling climate change to promoting responsible consumption and production.

A Community Effort
Achieving the Green Flag wasn’t an overnight accomplishment. It was the result of a dedicated, four-year-long effort involving CMU-Q students, staff, and faculty working together.
The journey began in September 2020 with a clear vision to integrate sustainability into every aspect of campus life. The initiative, led by professors Jennifer Bruder and Elissar Hajjar, focused on three core areas: food equity, climate change, and waste management.
As part of the sustainability journey, CMU-Q established a community garden, which serves as a green space and helps reduce waste by composting cafeteria scraps. This project, along with other initiatives, made a remarkable impact on campus operations and helped CMU-Q earn its Green Flag status.
