If you think that 2020 has nothing interesting in store, then let me correct you, because you’ve never been so wrong. Movie enthusiasts and contemporary filmmakers are marking their calendars for arguably the most exciting event taking place in 2020. The first edition of the Shasha Mobile Film Festival is going to take place on-ground from the 25th till the 31st of October in El Gouna at TUB, and submissions have been coming in since September 19th; a fully digital festival accompanied by on-ground screenings and awards festivities.
The mobile film festival is held in collaboration with TikTok, the leading destination for short-form & live mobile videos, allowing creators to compete in different categories simply by submitting short films shot on mobile phones.

Shasha Mobile Film Festival is every young filmmaker’s dream come true, it celebrates and acknowledges short films shot only using mobile phones. The festival aims to create a platform for mobile filmmakers to make sure their art doesn’t go unnoticed, but rather honored, supported, acknowledged, and promoted. Modern filmmakers will be given the space to compete, promote, expose, and challenge themselves among other filmmakers and storytellers.
The film festival will have several competitions with different themes that filmmakers can compete in. Eight professionals from the film and media industry will select the best films to be screened during the festival and will also reward the winning filmmakers during the awards ceremony. The jury members for Shasha’s competitions will be Mariam Naoum, writer and Head of Jury at the Festival, Director Amin Dorra, Actress Fatima Al Banawi, Cinematographer Islam Abdelsamie, Editor Ahmed Hafez, DOP Nancy Abdel Fattah, Director Mariam Abou Auf, and Producer Shahd Ramzy.

Up to this point, Shasha Mobile film festival has received submissions almost from every country in the MENA region, and more than 22 countries worldwide. The submissions are promising and providing us with a diverse selection, that only reflects the widespread of mobile cinema culture across the world.

Leading up to the festival, the team organized a four-day workshop about the fundamentals of storytelling for young participants who are passionate about filmmaking. The insightful workshop was conducted by the accomplished Egyptian film writer and director, Nesma Zazou, who holds her Master’s degree in Film Directing from the Met Film School in London. There were also several seminars that took place during the workshops that were attended by celebs and iconic filmmakers like Mariam Naoum, Mohamed Mashish, Sherif Fathy, Islam Abdelsamie, and Tamer Mohsen.
“Egypt and the Middle East have a young growing population of talents. At Shasha, we aim to provide space for promising young authors and directors to present their work and promote themselves amongst other filmmakers. Since opening the submission last September, we have received a plethora of promising applications almost from every country in the MENA region and from more than 22 countries worldwide,” said Festival Director Ahmed Reda.

“Today, a generation’s behavior is being documented and made available on social media. The wide spread of mobile phones has led to an increase in the amount of video content being produced by young talents and reflects a great amount of creativity. It is only natural that mobile phones currently play a major role in the filmmaking industry. Accordingly, we have decided to create an opportunity for young and amateur directors to present their art and to receive the necessary support,” said Aref Fakhoury, the General Coordinator.
