Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Culture recently inaugurated the highly anticipated Common Ground festival in Riyadh, celebrating the rich cultural ties between Saudi Arabia and Iraq.

The event, which kicked off on December 18, 2024, is set to run until December 31, offering visitors an immersive experience of the deep cultural and historical connections between the two nations.

Held at Mega Studios in Boulevard City, the festival is a powerful tribute to Iraq’s artistic and intellectual heritage, with a series of diverse activities and exhibitions planned.

The Common Ground festival opened with a vibrant program showcasing Iraqi culture, marking the first day with a special artistic evening and a tribute to renowned Iraqi poet Kareem Al-Iraqi. Al-Iraqi’s literary contributions have enriched both the artistic and literary landscapes of the region.

The event’s opening ceremony included performances that honored his legacy, setting the tone for the festival’s broader focus on cultural exchange.

The festival being a celebration of art and intellectual exploration, includes seminars and dialogue sessions which are being held throughout the event, focusing on the shared history and cultural themes between Saudi Arabia and Iraq.

    Four Distinct Cultural Sections

The festival is divided into four main sections, each offering a unique perspective on the two countries’ shared history and cultural expressions.

    Art Exhibition: Celebrating Cultural Harmony

One of the most anticipated sections is the art exhibition, which features over 100 pieces by celebrated Saudi and Iraqi artists.

This showcase highlights the deep cultural connections between the two nations, illustrating how their artistic traditions have evolved together through centuries. The exhibition is backed by extensive research and offers a visual journey through the intertwined histories of Saudi Arabia and Iraq.

    Al-Mutanabbi Street: A Literary Tribute

The second section, Al-Mutanabbi Street, pays homage to one of the most revered poets in Arab history. Known for his influence in Baghdad, Al-Mutanabbi’s poetry resonates throughout the region.

This section includes a mural of Arabic calligraphy, poems by the poet, and a reimagined Shabandar Café, offering a true cultural experience. Visitors can browse book-filled shops and attend seminars exploring the literary traditions and intellectual dialogue between the two nations.

Realm of Melody and Authenticity: A Musical Celebration

The third section, Realm of Melody and Authenticity, celebrates the musical heritage of both countries.

Classical music concerts, performed by leading Saudi and Iraqi musicians, such as Kathim Al Saher, are set to captivate audiences, providing a fitting soundtrack to the festival. This segment also honors various artists whose work has enriched the cultural fabric of both nations.

Path of Connection: A Cultural Exploration for All Ages

The final section, Path of Connection, is designed to immerse visitors in the diverse cultural practices of Saudi Arabia and Iraq. A vibrant children’s area offers interactive activities, including heritage games, arts and crafts, and storytelling sessions that reflect the cultural richness of both countries.

Additionally, the culinary offerings at the festival are not to be missed. The restaurant area features a delightful blend of Saudi and Iraqi flavors, offering visitors a chance to taste the authentic dishes that define each nation’s culinary traditions. Visitors can enjoy distinctly flavored Saudi coffee and traditional Iraqi tea, symbols of Arab hospitality.

The Common Ground festival is a reflection of Saudi Arabia’s ongoing commitment to cultural diplomacy. As part of the broader national cultural strategy under Saudi Vision 2030, the event aims to strengthen ties between Saudi Arabia and Iraq while promoting cultural understanding through art and intellectual exchange.

By providing a platform for collaborative artistic and intellectual initiatives, the festival fosters deeper connections and a mutual appreciation of the cultural heritage shared by the two nations.
