Today the fashion world is paying tribute to the late Azzedine Alaïa by exhibiting over 30 of his dresses in the Je Suis Couturier exhibition. The exhibition takes place at the Association Azzedine Alaïa in Paris where he spent hours creating breathtaking and unique gowns.
Je Suis Couturier is set to run for six months, from Jan 22 till June 10, which happens to be at the same time of the Paris Couture Week launch. The name ‘Je Suis Couturier’ is drawn from one of Alaïa’s most famous quotes “I’m not a designer, I’m a couturier.”
All the dresses featured in the exhibition were hand-picked by Olivier Saillard, the Exhibition’s Curator, which includes a white metal studded dress from the 1980s, Naomi Campbell’s last look at Alaïa’s final couture show back in July, a black column dress, and a dress inspired by the Matisse room at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, which Alaïa created in 2013. They are all almost exclusively black and white.
The Association Azzedine Alaïa, which was founded in 2007, is planning on organizing three exhibitions yearly featuring Alaïa’s collection of photography, fashion, and furniture. The Association will also produce books, movies and open a bookshop in April in the courtyard.
