Then and Now: Zamalek in Photos

Filled with farms, cattle and markets, Zamalek was unrecognizable in the late 1800s…

Every building looked like a palace, even if it wasn’t…

The view from the Nile was as peaceful and serene as ever…

The roads were cleaner and less crowded…

The people were laid back and easy-going…

And every photograph looked like it came out of a postcard…

Although Zamalek will always hold a special place in our hearts, we can’t help but realize the significant change… Whether for better or worse, here’s what makes Zamalek stand out nowadays:

    The trees

Still there, yet a hundred times more beautiful are these extraordinary trees.

Being in a country that doesn’t have much greenery, the feel of nature around you, from the fascinating old trees to the Nile, is one of the many things that make Zamalek a warm and cozy place. A place you can easily feel at home.

Centuries later, being around the Nile still makes everything better – the view, the weather and just our mood really.

A newer addition to Zamalek that makes us love it even more are the boats and feluccas. This spectacular view makes us go all the way to Zamalek just to feast our eyes on something calming and beautiful for a change.

    The Cats

With the increase in cafes and shops in the area, along came the cats, too! Whether you like it or not, around every corner you’ll find a cat. You might get annoyed at first, but after a while, they become so familiar, you find yourself naming them, feeding them and treating them as your own little pets.

With Zamalek being home to two art schools and a few galleries, it is quite common to find artists all around this area. With that comes the exceptional street art that you see spread all over the walls of Zamalek.

The diversity of things you find around every corner

But our favourite addition to Zamalek and what we see makes it truly exceptional is the different kinds of people, the diversity of places and the general environment that is booming with liveliness.
