Nadine Hachach-Haram: The Lebanese Surgeon Who’s Saying No To Borders and Boundaries

Dr. Nadine Hachach-Haram is a Lebanese plastic surgeon, lecturer and clinical entrepreneur specializing in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Hachach-Haram was born in California, USA, but she received her first degree from the American University of Beirut. She then graduated from the University College London with a specialization in plastic surgery and restoration.

She’s currently based in London and over the past ten years, she’s been working in the National Health Service in the UK. During her work as a surgeon, Dr. Hachach-Haram noticed that distance across countries prevented people from obtaining access to places with scientific progress and expertise elsewhere in the world.

Therefore, in 2014, Dr. Hachach-Haram met with the communications engineer, Talal Ali Ahmad, to brainstorm together to solve this problem and get to the very core of the issue. In 2015, the groundbreaking medical platform, Proxemie, was founded by the talented team. According to Proxemie’s official website, what they do is basically “build augmented reality technology that helps surgeons get remote assistance and training from anywhere in the world”. This means that Proxemie allows all surgeons and doctors from anywhere in the world to interact with each other during surgery; so a surgeon in a certain country can take part in a surgery that is taking place on the other side of the world, enabling all doctors around the world to meet in one operating room with just a click of a button. And not just that; this cloud-based system can also train many medical students who are based in different countries, making geography and borders no longer an obstacle to learn and discover new innovations.

Since 2015, the smart system has been developed and tested in various hospitals including the AUB Medical Centre. And soon after the launch of Proxemie, the whole world started to notice the amazing innovation, and a growing excitement started to take hold. Later on, Dr. Hachach-Haram received the prestigious “British Empire Medal” by the Queen herself for Hachach-Haram’s extraordinary services to the British community and the world as a whole.
