For as long as I can remember, we have always had kahk for Eid. It is one of these traditions that remain here and now, no matter how the outside world changes. For generations, families would gather together to knead, cut and stuff the kahk’s dough with malban, nuts and dates. Today, the infamous Eid dessert has become even more popular, sold in multiple shops across the country.

During Eid el Fitr, in Egypt, if you enter any bakery or patisserie shop, you will find rows and rows of the sugar coated biscuit behind enormous display cases. To indulge in the popular dessert, we put together our favorite places across the country where you can buy delicious kahk.

    Sedra

Since 2003, this dessert shop has made a big name for itself as the ultimate patisserie shop. Today, it is also known as the ultimate contender when it comes to the infamous kahk. Sedra kept holding onto that mantle for many years. Each of its kahk biscuits are known for their heavier, thicker and fattier taste. The patisserie is known to serve up a richer kind of kahk with a strong toasted and sesame flavor. Be sure to head to any of its branches across Cairo and grab a one kilo box for 240 EGP.

    Salé Sucré

Since 1999, this pastry shop has been serving up a taste of Paris across the region. Today, it has up to 40 stores that are open in Egypt, UAE and Kuwait. This special bakery grew beyond its initial French specialties and has become renowned for its freshly baked Middle Eastern desserts. As a popular dessert spot, it is also known for its kahk which is sold in all its branches for 240 EGP (one kilo box).

    Breadfast

What started out as an online, home delivery bakery has now become a store selling everything from groceries to home essentials like laundry detergents. Today, Breadfast, the online store that does it all also has its very own oriental desserts and the infamous kahk. They have everything from the classic plain kahk to typical fillings like agameya and walnut. Many who have tried this year’s edition of the sugar coated biscuit said it’s better than last years and has a very soft, almost melt-in-your-mouth texture. Order your box now with a one kilo plain kahk box costing 220 EGP.

    Thomas

Anyone who is into pastries and desserts will definitely know Thomas, the patisserie shop. Popular for its French pastries like the classic éclair and mille feuille, the pastry shop is also known for its delicious kahk. Their own version of the Eid biscuit is a little different as it comes in very small sizes, is slightly toasted with a crunchy exterior and soft interior but still stands as a crowd favorite option among many people. Getting a one kilo box of their kahk will cost you 260 EGP.

    Tseppas

One of the first kahk shops to open, considered the OG of patisseries and desserts in Egypt, Tseppas is the infamous shop serving up delicious basboosa, balah el sham and other kinds of oriental desserts. They are also known for their kahk. Their kahk is known for its strong smell, slightly toasted flavor but it is not the top choice when it comes to taste. Its popularity still stands and many people flock to its shop to buy their one kilo box of kahk that costs 260 EGP.

    El Abd

Opening its doors way back in 1974 at Downtown Cairo’s Talaat Harb street, the bakery has made a name for itself along the years and became cemented as a go-to for fresh cheap croissants and pates. Today, it is also well-versed in the art of oriental desserts and is a great contender when it comes to its kahk. Eating any of its kahk biscuits, you will immediately taste that signature sesame flavor. It is neither too soft nor too hard and is considered of good quality. Add to that the fact that its extremely reasonably priced, costing 170 EGP a kilo, making it an underrated yet great choice.

    Simonds

Since 1898, Simonds made a name for itself as the ultimate destination for dessert lovers. It has been serving up everything from pastries & cakes to oriental sweets and probably the best Danish in Egypt. When it comes to their kahk, it is probably the most expensive option in this list costing 295 EGP per kilo. Despite its hefty price, Simonds is known for its excellent quality kahk packed with a strong sesame flavor. It is very buttery, rich and soft making it a top contender in terms of taste. Served in a fancy golden box making it perfect gift to bring to any large gathering.

    NOLA

A passion project of brother and sister Adel and Laila Sedky who noticed that there was market gap in Egypt’s dessert market and that is what led them to open up the first local cupcake store called Nola back in 2010. Beyond their whimsical cupcakes, they are known to make their very own kahk. Many describe their kahk as the melt-in-your mouth and extremely soft kind. It is also known to deviate away from the conventional taste of a classic kahk but it does have its own appeal. Order your box now with one kilo costing 215 EGP.

No matter where you buy kahk from, biting into the infamous biscuit will always remain as one of the most beloved traditions of Eid Al-Fitr. We hope that this guide brings you closer to celebrating the beloved annual holiday.
