Verdi’s Opera Aida is going to one of the most historic venues in the world, the mortuary temple of Hatshepsut. This October, on the 26th and 28th, Luxor is hosting arguably the most iconic show in modern history in a smart attempt to promote the ancient city. The city of Luxor has already started marketing the event in several European and Asian countries.
Aida is a four-act opera inspired by ancient Egypt, composed by the Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi, and was first commissioned by Cairo’s Khedival Opera House. It premiered on the 24th of December 1871, although it was supposed to be played during the opening of the Suez Canal but got delayed.
The show will feature 80 singers and 100 musicians. It will aim to attract thousands of tourists, including high profile attendees such as kings, presidents, public figures, celebrities, and diplomats.
Opera Aida tells the romantic story of an Ethiopian slave called Aida who fell in love with an Egyptian army commander called Radamis. The romantic story depicts the struggle that Aida goes through and the dilemma between her love and her duties towards her country.
Aida has been performed in different countries abroad and was performed last year in front of the Great Pyramids of Giza. The show has been performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York more than 1100 times since 1886.
