This year, a unique convergence occurs as Mother’s Day falls on March 21, aligning with the final days of Ramadan and Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Decree).

This period offers a profound opportunity to honor mothers within the spiritual ambiance of Ramadan, reflecting on Islamic teachings that emphasize the esteemed status of mothers.

The Revered Status of Mothers in Islam

Islam places immense importance on the role and respect of mothers. The Quran and Hadiths highlight the virtues and rights of mothers, underscoring their pivotal position in a believer’s life.

The Quran states: “We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship…”

This verse acknowledges the sacrifices and challenges mothers endure, urging children to treat them with utmost kindness and respect.

Furthermore, a renowned Hadith illustrates the elevated status of mothers:

A man once asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), “Who among people is most deserving of my fine treatment?” The Prophet replied, “Your mother.” The man then asked, “Who next?” The Prophet said, “Your mother.” The man further inquired, “Who next?” The Prophet repeated, “Your mother.” The man asked again, “Then who?” The Prophet finally said, “Then your father.”

This narration emphasizes that mothers are entitled to a triple portion of the child’s good conduct over fathers, highlighting their unparalleled significance.

The Last Ten Days of Ramadan: A Time for Increased Devotion

The concluding ten days of Ramadan hold special significance for Muslims worldwide. This period is marked by intensified worship, reflection, and seeking closeness to Allah.

Among these days is Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Decree), believed to be the night when the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Worship on this night is considered more rewarding than that of a thousand months.

Honoring Mothers During the Last Ten Days of Ramadan

The concurrence of Mother’s Day with the sacred final days of Ramadan in Egypt presents a unique opportunity for believers to merge cultural appreciation with religious devotion. Here are meaningful ways to honor mothers during this period:

    1. Express Gratitude and Affection: Take time to verbally express love and appreciation to your mother. Simple words acknowledging her sacrifices and expressing gratitude can have a profound impact.
    2. Assist in Daily Tasks: Lighten her load by helping with household chores, meal preparations, or other responsibilities, allowing her more time for rest and personal worship.
    3. Engage in Joint Worship: Participate in prayers, Quran recitation, and dhikr (remembrance of Allah) together. This not only strengthens spiritual bonds but also fosters a deeper familial connection.
    4. Prepare Iftar Together: Collaborate in preparing iftar to break the fast. Sharing this activity can be a source of joy and togetherness, embodying the spirit of Ramadan.
    5. Give Charity in Her Honor: Engage in acts of charity, such as donating to those in need, with the intention of honoring your mother. This reflects the values of compassion and generosity central to Ramadan.

This harmonious blend of cultural and religious observance enriches the essence of both occasions, fostering a holistic approach to honoring one’s mother in the light of faith.
