A few days ago, Mohammed Hussein proved to the world that nothing is impossible. In summiting the 2,285 meters heigh colossus of rock, the 14-year-old became the youngest Down’s Syndrome child to ever to climb Mount Moses.
Since childhood, Mohammed’s mother realized that he was passionate about climbing; the young would-be mountaineer used to enthusiastically climb 20-stories worth of stairs. His mother recalls a visit to the Pyramids of Giza, where Mohammed climbed to the 8th stone layer on his own.
In recent years, Mohammed became infatuated with YouTube videos of Egyptian Adventurer Mazen Hamza, so much so that his mother decided to contact Hamza online and ask him if he was willing to climb Mount Moses with Mohammed. Hamza promptly agreed, and in a few days, the two adventure-seekers were at Wadi Degla Natural Protectorate to train together. In addition, Mohammed had spent much of his time working out and preparing for the climb with his personal trainer.
Mohammed underwent a rigorous mental as well as physical training program that included a number of speech enhancement sessions. In what had seemed like a long shot, Mohammed has shown a positive response to the treatment.
Mohammed was ready to undertake the challenge, and he went on with his mother, personal trainer, and role model to climb Mount Mousa, and in a number of hours, the young mountaineer scaled his first challenge, becoming the first-ever Down’s Syndrome child to do so. His mother hopes that in the future, Mohammed will get the chance to climb more mountains in Egypt and around the world.
