In a historic win, 22-year-old Egyptian karate player Feryal Abdelaziz goes home with the gold medal after defeating her Azerbaijani rival Irina Zaretska 2-0 in the final event of the women Karate Kumite +61kg tournament. This is Egypt’s eighth gold medal and its first since the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.
Earlier in the day, Abdelaziz has taken on Kazakhstani Sofya Berultseva winning 5-4 in the semi-finals. However, as the stakes got higher, her ambition grew and with it the hopes and dreams of a hundred million Egyptians.
The win has made Abdelaziz the first-ever Egyptian female gold medalist crowning all her hard work with the highest possible honor.
Egyptian female athletes have been dominating the karate tournament over these last couple of days with Giana Farouk claiming bronze in Women’s Kumite -61kg winning Egypt its first-ever Karate medal.
This is the first time Karate makes it to the Olympics, and it could be its last. Organizers of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games have decided not to feature the sport in the 2024 events, making these wins an undying piece of history.
