I can not read another Facebook status or tweet about Galabeya fashion. Really people, come on, you’ve got fashion all wrong. Fashion is good for the soul. Full stop. Whether our new president may restrict what we wear and shit, fashion is for YOU first. The misconception here is that “style” and fashion are for public parading. People here tend to dress up to wow the social scene, and as bad as I feel about Morsi taking over, but I’m glad that this fashion trait will finally be over. We are not celebrities being chassed by paparazzi. We dress for our selves, whether later on Morsi wants to cover that with a galabeya or not, what lies beneath is for you to feel good about yourself.
Lets assume that we will wear the Galabeya, which I highly doubt will happen. At times like these you’ve got yourselves two solutions to be able to survive your fashion status. 1- LET GO. Sorry to be blunt and sound like the worst fashion editor in the world, but if it comes to us wearing Galabeyas on the outside you need to let go of the fact that you’ll always appear fashion savvy. Wear whatever you wantunderneath it and just accept that beneath the layers, you are still fashionable. 2- GET CREATIVE. I have a snap shot of a fashion icon we all know here and covet, who wore a beautiful galabeya with a bulky brown belt and gladiators in Ramadan a few years ago. Take it as a challenge.
But at the moment my method will be to SPEND. At the midst of a dark period creeping upon us, we need to let the little things make us feel good again. So if buying a new AzzaFahmy ring, dying the tips of my hair blonde or buying myself studded denim shorts from Zara, will make me feel better, I’ll do that everyday. Maybe Morsi will be good for the economy after all.
