In an announcement made by the Spokesman of the Egyptian Presidency, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has ordered the construction of the largest organ transplantation facility in Egypt, Africa, and the Middle East.
The announcement stated that President El-Sisi met with Prime Minister, Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Minister of Health and Population, Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Head of the Engineering Authority of the Armed Forces, Major General Hisham Mostafa Souefi, and Director of the Military Works Department, Major General Mohamed Mostafa Laban, where they discussed efforts to develop the healthcare system in Egypt.
Meeting Details
In the meeting, the Minister of Health presented the county’s healthcare map, which includes the numbers of both governmental and private medical facilities, their medical equipment, and medical staff manpower, and linked the map to the database of the presidential initiative, “100 Million Seha (health)” as well as what the initiative includes in medical care programs for citizens.
New Facility
The President also oversaw the latest updates regarding the development of the Nasser Institute into a globally recognized medical city, in which he ordered the establishment of the largest regional center for organ transplantation in Egypt, the Middle East, and Africa. He also directed that the construction of the institute and its many facilities would happen in cooperation with major specialized international companies in order to establish an integrated system, including an automated database for transplants, patients, and donors.
Social Discussions
The timing of the announcement is a prompt one as discussions regarding organ donation have been spurring up all over social media, ever since Egyptian actress Elham Shahin sparked the conversation when she stated that she was willing to donate her organs upon her death in an Instagram post.
The discussion started a debate about whether there were any religious issues regarding the matter. However, the Egyptian Dar Al-Ifta and Al-Azhar confirmed that it is Halal in certain cases. Others discussed the legality of the matter, but that was easily explained as documenting organ donation certificates has been regulated by the government since 2014.
How Can Someone Register To Become An Organ Donor?
There’s a process in place to make sure the documentation is certified, and that is by submitting documents at the Real Estate Registry and following certain rules. The rules include that the donor must be doing it of their own free will, and have a confirmed written testimony by the donor and supported by two first-degree relatives.
