Egypt’s Population Reaches 107 Million While Fertility Rate Drops to 2.54

Egypt’s population officially reached 107 million on Nov. 2, 2024, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).

This increase of one million from the previous count of 106 million on Feb. 8, 2024, marks a critical point in the nation’s demographic journey.

As Egypt’s population continues to expand, understanding the implications of this growth is essential for navigating the country’s economic and social landscape.

1 Million Increase in 268 Days

The last increase of one million people took 268 days (approximately 8.9 months) to happen. This is slower than the last two increases, which took 250 days (approximately 8.3 months) and 245 days (approximately 8.1 months).

This increase occurred 268 days (approximately 8.9 months) after Egypt’s population reached 106 million on Feb. 8, 2024. So, it took less than nine months to gain that extra million people.

This deceleration in growth could indicate the initial effects of declining fertility rates and population management initiatives aimed at balancing resource allocation and economic development.

    Fertility Rate Declines

The fertility rate has dropped from 3.5 children per woman in 2014 to 2.54 in 2023, marking a significant decrease of 28% over this nine-year period. This decline aligns with national goals to achieve a fertility rate of 2.4 by 2025 as part of the National Family Development Program.

Amira Tawadros, director of the Planning Ministry’s demographic center, attributed this decline to successful family planning initiatives. Other contributing factors include economic conditions, changing societal norms, and increased access to education and healthcare.

    Daily Birth Rate Drops

The average daily birth rate in Egypt is now 5,385, down from 5,599 when the population reached 106 million and 5,683 at 105 million.

CAPMAS reported 1.443 million births between February and November 2024, indicating a continuing trend of declining birth rates.

This represents a decrease of approximately 7.3% compared to the previous milestone. If the current rate persists, Egypt is projected to record around 1.94 million births annually, reflecting ongoing demographic changes and family planning efforts.

Egypt’s birth rate has declined from 21.1 per 1,000 people in 2022 to 19.4 per 1,000 in 2023, reflecting the impact of recent population management and family planning strategies. This gradual decrease suggests ongoing adjustments in family size preferences, influenced by economic factors and societal changes.

    Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

Despite a decline in birth rates, Egypt continues to face challenges, with over two million births annually, straining resources and impacting economic, social, and environmental efforts.

However, the youthful population presents opportunities for economic growth and innovation. By investing in education and workforce development, Egypt can harness this demographic advantage to drive progress while promoting sustainable growth through continued family planning initiatives.
