As if the ongoing abuse by the state police in Egypt wasn’t enough, but it has just come to light that staff members at a private drug rehabilitation center in Muqattam, Cairo have been torturing their patients.
The scandal was initially brought to light when a father of one of the patients at the center went to the police, claiming his son when missing. After an investigation on the center and its facilities, police had found that the 20-year old son, Alaa had committed suicide in the rehab center’s bathroom.
Upon realizing something unorthodox had happened to their son, Alaa’s parents showed prosecutors under cover footage of the center torturing their patients. Beating, stripping, shaving their heads, and bounding them were common practices.
According to Alaa’s parents their son repeatedly complained that he was being subjected to torture, but the center would immediately reject the claims, saying their son was saying that in order to get out of the treatment.
Official charges have been brought against the staff and the center, in which they handlers on site told prosecutors that they were instructed by the dr.’s at the center to beat the patients that were suffering from epileptic fits.
It has now been brought to light that the center may not even have been qualified to provide drug rehabilitation, and all the staff and doctors have been called into questioning
, as it turns out young Alaa actually didn’t commit suicide but actually died of abuse related injuries!
