The Cost of a University Education in Egypt

We’ve already established that education in Egypt is expensive, considering your elementary to high school years can cost you over a cool million Egyptian pounds.

Which got us thinking, if we’re spending a million pounds to educate our youth, what will their university education cost?

    American University in Cairo (AUC)

    AUC Fees

AUC obviously likes to over-complicate things as students are expected to pay their tuition in U.S. dollars and Egyptian pounds. Smart move, AUC – at least you’re benefiting from the increasing rate of the dollar!

According to the above chart, on average, a student will pay approximately 65,095 LE per semester, which equals 130,190 LE per year. This means that over a span of four years, they will spend 520,760 LE! Yup, add that to the one mill you spent on their elementary to high school education.

I’m an AUC graduate; I’m not hating on the university and I don’t want this to be taken in the wrong context, but with the education I got and what has been spent, I wish I had traveled abroad.

    German University in Cairo (GUC)

    GUC Fees

The German University in Cairo is known to be one of the top universities in Cairo, churning out some of the best applied arts students I have personally employed.

If we take the average semester fees of 34,620 LE, that means parents will be shelling out a hot 276,960 LE for the average eight semesters a student spends in university.

University of Modern Sciences and Arts (MSA)

    MSA Fees

MSA, also known as Modern Sciences and Arts located in 6th of October, is also known as one of the biggest and most prestigious in Egypt. On average, based on the above fees, if a student spens 20,450 LE per semester, they’ll be spending 163,600 LE over their four year (eight semester) stay on campus.

    British University in Egypt (BUE)

    BUE Fees

The British University in Cairo located in Shorouk has taken over the East side of Cairo, offering a diverse list of majors.

Based on last year’s tuition costs, on average, if the student is spending 39,000 LE per year, over four years they will have blown 156,000 LE.

    Misr International University (MIU)

    MIU Tuition and Fees

Located on the Ismailia Desert Road, MIU offers different faculties for students to choose from. On average, if a student spends 34,500 LE per year over their four year stay on campus, they will have paid 138,000 LE.

    Université Française d’Egypte (UFE)

    53_big

Looking to study in French? The French University in Egypt has got you covered with an average tuition of 25,000 LE per year. By the time you get your certificate, you’ll have spent around 100,000 LE.

    Canadian International College (CIC)

    CIC Tuition Fees

The Canadian University in Cairo, located in New Cairo and Sheikh Zayed, offers majors from Business to Mass Comm.

Tuition fees in the regular program are 23,190 LE per year, meaning over four years, students will have spent 92,760 LE.

    Shorouk Academy

    cover_1

Located in Shorouk City, Shorouk Academy offers Engineering, Business and Mass Communication. On average, the tuition is approximately 10,000 LE per year, meaning over four years, students will have spent a minimum of 40,000 LE.

    Modern Academy

    Modern academy

Modern Academy has two campuses, one located in Maadi and another on the Ring Road. With a few majors to choose from such as Computer Science, Business Administration and Engineering, the average tuition fees are around 7,000 LE per year, adding up to 28,ooo LE over the course of four.

    Ain Shams University (ASU)

    Ain-Shams-admin-building

Another one of Egypt’s oldest universities, Ain Shams’s public program is approximately 500 LE per year, equaling 2,000 LE over four years.

As for their private section, 20,000 LE per year is spent on the student’s education. Thus, their four year educational stay on campus will have equaled 80,000 LE.

    Cairo University

    6_1412929641_1188

One of the oldest universities in the Middle East, Cairo University is located in the center of Cairo, with one of the biggest sprawling campuses.

If admitted to the English Department, students pay approximately 10,000 LE per year, equaling 40,000 LE over four years.

But, get this: If you are admitted into the Arabic Department, students pay approximately 200 LE per year. WHAT?!

Faculty of Fine Arts – Helwan University

    (Via)

For all the ARTEESTS out there, this is probably one of the most under-rated tuition costs we have seen. As with most public universities in Egypt, on average, students pay 300 LE per year, meaning that over their five year tenure, 1,500 LE will have been spent on their education.

    Alexandria University

    Alex u

One of the most popular universities in Alexandria, like most public universities, tuition fees cost on average of 300 LE per year. With most faculties ranging between 4-5 years, the accumulative tuition fees for your entire undergraduate education would cost from 1,200 – 1,500 LE.

WE SAID THIS: The insane gap between the public university fees and the private is astonishing. But it still leaves me with the unanswered question: Are these students really getting an education worth all this money?
