Diving headfirst into the world of sustainability, Egypt is introducing Africa’s first-ever Hydrogen building, a 50-story skyscraper. The project was announced back in 2023 and will involve a partnership between Forbes and Magnom Properties, a real estate company based in Saudi Arabia.
Getting To Know The Skyscraper
The unique structure will take over Cairo’s expanding New Administrative Capital. Construction will kick off in 2025 and be completed by 2030.
The skyscraper is planned to boast a soaring glass, steel, and photovoltaic-laced design. It will feature curves of glass and steel that launch skyward, forming 55 floors of office space and two stories of retail space.
Sustainability At The Forefront
What makes this building special is that it will be powered by hydrogen, paving the way for innovative methods of generating energy for buildings and structures. This project has the potential to expand the applications of hydrogen and support Africa’s efforts to diversify its use.
The push for hydrogen is driven by the Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction, which found that emissions from buildings accounted for 34% of energy demand and up to 37% of energy-related emissions as of 2021.
This highlights the major energy consumption of buildings, and their energy usage can be reduced by powering them with hydrogen.
The project is in line with Egypt’s green hydrogen strategy, which aims to become a leader in exporting green hydrogen by 2040. Over the years, more hydrogen buildings are expected to be constructed to promote an energy-efficient future.
