Meet, Alexandria born, Raneem El Welily, world’s number one squash player!
The three-time tournament winner who took home the championship medal at the El Gouna International, PSA World Tour Platinum. Aggressively playing against Nouran Gohar in the glass court, Welily defended her Gouna title. The consistent player proved her hunger for the prize, coming in harder round after round, landing straight on top.
After a close call during a tough match with Egyptian-American, Amanda Sobhy, Raneem made it to the finals. She expressed her thoughts of concern coming in, knowing her tough and ambitious opponent wasn’t an easy match.
The fast fiery match was met with extreme blazing weather, in which Welily claimed worked in her advantage. She stated, “I tried to make it as fast paced as possible to get her exhausted early on, building on very long tough rallies at the beginning of the match helped me get an easy win in the end”. However, Amanda wasn’t an easy defeat, as Welily was on her toes, expecting a comeback.
Preparing for the big win, Welily told Scoop Empire, she likes to be on edge rather than being overconfident. She explained her preference to be tense with the feeling of butterflies in her stomach before her match.
Welily was aware of her opponent, Gohar’s form and how it would be hard to push mentally at that point. At last, her strategy and energetic attacks earned her the title.
