In case you haven’t heard, a group of prominent American football players are currently in Cairo.
“Having a great time in this city so far,” DeAngelo Williams of the Pittsburgh Steelers wrote on Facebook Tuesday. “Our tour guides and the Egyptian people have been so great to us everywhere we go. Traffic gets crazy though on the roads. Never seen anything like it! You gotta be brave to drive these streets.”
Williams, one of the NFL’s top running backs, is in Egypt along with retired Super Bowl champion Marshawn Lynch of the Seattle Seahawks, All-Pro Gary Barnidge and Johnson Bademosi of the Cleveland Browns, All-Pro Jordan Cameron of the Miami Dolphins, Palestinian-American Oday Aboushi of the Houston Texans, Super Bowl champion Breno Giacomini of the New York Jets, Erik Lorig formerly of the New Orleans Saints, Craig Loston formerly of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Colby Cameron of the Fujitsu Frontiers.
They are here on a noble mission to support American Football Without Barriers, a non-profit organization that aims to teach discipline, teamwork and sports to disadvantaged youth in the U.S. and abroad.
AFWB has partnered up with the Egyptian Federation of American Football to host free camps in Cairo from Wednesday to Saturday for players aged 14-25, as well as a coaching clinic led by AFWB co-founder Giacomini.
Giacomini and Barndige came up with the idea of AFWB in 2011 along with their college classmate Ahmed Awadallah, who was born and raised in Egypt.
Since the group’s arrival on Feb. 28, they’ve visited the Pyramids, the Cairo Tower and the Egyptian Museum.
“Love the food and history of this city,” Barnidge wrote on the AFWB blog on Monday. “First stop of the day was the Great Pyramids. I’d already been once before, but I’ve always been fascinated by Egyptian culture and history so seeing the pyramids will never get old. Plus, so many guys in our group had never been before, so the expressions on their faces were enough to bring back the excitement for me.”
In the video below, Lynch is apparently so thrilled about being at the pyramids that he’s seen rapping about ghost riding the whip… on a camel.
Getting on the camel is one thing, but we’d love to see Marshawn gas-break-dip on a camel one time!
