Kuwait is stepping up its traffic safety game with a high-tech solution that’s already making waves. In just four days, advanced artificial intelligence (AI) cameras installed across the country identified 4,122 traffic violations, according to Kuwait’s Ministry of Interior.

The violations underscore a growing effort to tackle dangerous driving habits and make roads safer for everyone.

Distracted driving has long been a major concern in Kuwait, with officials attributing 90% of the country’s 300 daily accidents to behaviors like:

    • Mobile phone use
    • Speeding
    • Reckless driving
    • Moving violations

The introduction of AI cameras specifically targets two of the most widespread issues: seat belt neglect and the use of phones while driving.

These infractions may seem minor, but their consequences are far-reaching. The Ministry has highlighted that such distractions significantly contributed to the 199 road fatalities reported in the first nine months of this year.

The AI cameras represent a leap forward in traffic monitoring. They automatically detect violations without requiring a physical police presence. This not only increases efficiency but also ensures consistency in enforcing traffic laws. The data collected serves as a basis for issuing fines and reinforcing accountability among road users.

    What This Means for Drivers

For Kuwaiti motorists, these new measures bring both challenges and opportunities. On the one hand, stricter enforcement means there’s little room for error.

Hefty fines are set to replace outdated penalties, with seat belt violations now costing drivers KD30 instead of KD10 and mobile phone use fines skyrocketing from KD5 to KD75. Plus, any traffic recklessness will result in a KD150 fine.

On the other hand, these initiatives emphasize awareness as much as enforcement. The Ministry has launched campaigns urging drivers to take responsibility for their actions, highlighting how small changes—like buckling up or putting the phone down—can save lives.

The message is clear: safe driving benefits everyone, and technology is here to help make that happen.

    A Step Toward Safer Roads

Kuwait’s decision to harness AI for traffic safety signals a forward-thinking approach to a persistent problem. While the system is still new, its immediate impact demonstrates its potential to curb reckless driving and reduce accidents.

As the country updates its traffic laws and ramps up monitoring efforts, the hope is that drivers will adapt to a culture of compliance, making the roads safer for all. For now, one thing is certain: the AI cameras are watching, and they mean business!
