The European Union’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, accused Israel of funding the military group Al Qassam ‘Hamas’ last Friday, January 19. Borrell, who is in charge of the Union’s foreign policy, said, “Hamas was financed by the Israeli government in an attempt to weaken the Palestinian Authority.”
This isn’t the first time oppositional politicians have called out Netanyahu’s funding of Hamas. In a controversial article published by The New York Times last December, Mark Mazzetti and Ronen Bergman suggested Netanyahu’s allowing Qatari aid to Hamas for years, claiming it was a strategy to restore peace in the region and encourage Hamas to only stick to governing.
In another op-ed published one day after the Hamas attack by the Times of Israel, Tal Schneider wrote: “Israel has allowed suitcases holding millions in Qatari cash to enter Gaza through its crossings since 2018, in order to maintain its fragile cease-fire with the Hamas rulers of the Strip.”
On Thursday, January 18th, the EU filed a non-binding resolution that calls for a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip on the condition that all Hamas-held hostages are released and the dismantlement of the organization. It was adopted by 312 votes in favor, 131 against, and 72 abstentions.
