Egyptian couple Dina Saad and Mahmoud Abdel Bary are national athletes, swimmers in fact, who just got engaged two days ago. They posted their pictures on Facebook which led to people sharing their photos with messages of love and congratulation, but sadly, social media is a double-edged sword. A cyber-mob rushed in with their bullying comments, attacking the couple. Some of them tried to force Saad to wear hijab, others bashed the parents for getting them engaged in the first place.
The comments are just absolutely hideous. What is wrong with people? How can someone go out of their way to make someone else’s day miserable, for no reason at all? How? How dare you tell them who they want to be or who they should? Honestly. Who died and made you king of anything?
The comments shed light on a major misconception Egyptians have adopted for years, and it’s that people with Down syndrome can’t get married because they’re not “modrekeen” which translates to aware of their surroundings (shown in the hateful comment below). Well, let me tell you that the National Down Syndrome Society have conducted a study and Down syndrome people are modrekeen. They can get married, they can give birth, and all the other things you say they can’t do.
The only difference between people with Down syndrome and non-Down syndrome people’s reproductive system is that fertility of both genders is somehow limited. Other than that, Down syndrome individuals or couples can fall in love, get married, give birth to even non-Down syndrome babies a well. The likelihood of mothers with Down syndrome giving birth to babies with trisomy 21 or other developmental disabilities doesn’t exceed 50%.
The sweetheart couple, Saad and Abdel Bary, were brought together through their love and passion for swimming. The first time their eyes locked was at the national swimming tournament for special abilities, according to Youm7. The lovebirds then flew together with the Egyptian team to Italy for the international tournament. When they returned to Egypt, their relationship developed, they fell in love and Abdel Bary proposed to her and put a ring on it!
