The Evolution of the Mother-Daughter Relationship

The relationship between a mother and daughter evolves in a way that is hard to grasp. For many, the rough teenage times are made easier, having a best friend from the very start in a relationship that gets stronger by the minute.

My mother recently told me that the only person who will love you unconditionally and put up with you at your absolute worst and see you through is your mother. That was her way of telling me get your shit together before your friends walk away, but still, she had a point.

I’ve never been much of a family person, and being the youngest of four little devils, my mother had a lot on her plate. That meant there wasn’t much time for us to be friends, but more time for me to prove just how rebellious I can be and for her to prove how great she was as a mother.

It took me until a very late stage to realize how difficult it actually is to be a mom, and looking at us now and back then, it amazes me how the mother-daughter bond evolves over time.

Just seeing how the roles seem to change as time goes by makes you appreciate the relationship, the bond and most important your mum more than ever.

She welcomes you into the world

Mothers go through a huge load of physical and emotional pain to bring you into the world. Many people believe that bringing a child into the world is one of the greatest miracles of life. What mothers go through even before a child is born is hard to understand, and no one truly gets what a miracle it is until they’ve actually been in their shoes.

She teaches you how to speak, how to walk, how to eat…

A mother puts up with you like no one else. She makes it her mission to nourish you and watch you grow and teaches you the basics of everything you need in your life. It’s not an easy task teaching someone who doesn’t understand a single thing, but they put in the effort and make it their life mission because that’s what a mother does.

She teaches you manners and how to act in front of people

    good-manners

Where do our manners come from? Well from our parents, of course. A mother injects her little ones with the values, beliefs and morals and teaches us how to deal with the world. My mother taught me to always be fair in a world filled with unfairness and that two wrongs never make a right.

    She takes care of you

Those endless nights where she stays up checking your temperature or worrying about you. She takes you under her wing and bathes you, makes sure you’re presentable and is always there to be the shoulder to cry on. No matter how old you get, you’ll always be your mama’s little kid and she’ll always have her arms wide open for you.

She’s very hard on you because she wants what’s best for you

Sometimes, we don’t make the right decisions, and as a mother, it is her job to put some sense into us. After all, a mother knows best. It isn’t easy seeing your kids hate you because you’re being strict, but mothers put up with that because they always have your best interest at heart.

She puts up with your shit and stays by your side

close-up of a mother hugging her daughter

There is no unconditional love quite like a mother has for her kids. No matter how annoying you are or what you’re going through, she is always there, right by your side. Yes, she’ll be giving you shit and talking you into your senses, but when no one else will put up with you, it’s a lovely feeling to know your mother will love you no matter what.

As we grow up, the roles start to change and even though a mother will always try to play her part, sometimes you end up being the one taking care of them and looking out for them and bringing them to their senses. Let us remember when we make fun of them for not being able to send a text message, that they were the ones who taught us how to speak.

Let us remember when, God forbid, they have health issues and need someone by their side that they stayed up endless nights taking care of us.

Let us remember that when they become stubborn and difficult to deal with that they put up with all our crap and attitude.

Let us remember that we are who we are today because of the greatness of our mothers.

Let us remember that if there’s anyone who deserves to be paid it forward, it is the one person who nurtured us into this world and was there through it all, it is the person to whom we owe the most: our mothers.
