While the Middle East might not be famous for churches, Lebanon surely is. Being one of the largest Christian communities in the Middle East, Lebanon is home to a vast number of churches.
From churches that have lived through historical events, to others with incredible architecture, here are just a few churches in Lebanon that stand out.
First Armenian Evangelical Church
The name comes from being the first church founded in Lebanon by Armenian Evangelicals and serves the Armenian communities holding holy services every Sunday at 10 am. It is located in the heart of Beiruit and supports Yeprem Martha Pilibossian Armenian Evangelical College since 1943.
St. Gregory Armenian Catholic Cathedral
Located in Beirut, the cathedral church holds the seat of the Armenian Catholic Patriarchate of Cilicia. Inspired by Roman artists, the architectural change from traditional Armenian architecture is noticeable.
St. George Maronite Cathedral
St. George Maronite Cathedral is the cathedral of the Maronite Archiocese of the city of Beirut. Inspired by the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, the construction with a Neoclassical facade along with the interior and plan were built.
The cathedral was demolished during the Lebanese civil war but was restored after the end of the hostilities.
St. Louis Capuchin Church
This Latin Catholic church in downtown Beirut was built in 1864 by the Capuchin missionaries and was named in honor of King Louis IX of France.
The church is known for its sandstone front wall, rose-coloured wooden windows and its new towering campanile.
St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral
St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral is the city’s oldest extant church and is the seat of the Greek Orthodox Metropolitan bishop of the Orthodox Archdiocese of Beirut and its dependencies.
Church of Saidet et Tallé
The Church of Saidet et Talle is a Maronite Church in Deir el Qamar in Lebanon.
Mar Sarkis, Ras Al Nahr
The Monastery of Mars Sarkis, Ehden is located in the North Governate of Lebanon. It is dedicated to Saints Sarkis and Bakhsos. The name Ras Al Nahr translates to the top of the rivers, which is where this monastery lies.
Monastery of Qozhaya
Dedicated to Saint Anthony the Great, this holy place was built in the North Governate of Lebanon. The name translates to “the treasure of life”.
