On May 5, 2025, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, unveiled a new vision for Dubai’s public spaces. The Hewi Dubai Initiative aims to bring the best of old Emirati neighborhoods into the future, blending tradition with a modern, community-focused approach.

Here’s how the new initiative plans to transform the way people in Dubai live, connect, and experience their surroundings!

The Hewi Dubai Initiative aims to blend the traditions of old Emirati fareej (neighborhoods) with today’s needs for community and activity. Developed by the Dubai Future Foundation in partnership with Dubai Municipality, it kicks off during the UAE’s Year of Community.

The idea is simple: create parks and gathering spots that invite people to meet, play, and connect—just like they did in the past.

One of the features of the Hewi Dubai Initiative is its collaborative design process. For example, the design is being developed with strong input from the local community, ensuring that the space truly reflects the needs and values of the people who live nearby.

This personalized approach helps ensure that the spaces are functional and creates a deeper connection between neighbors. That way, Hewi Dubai ensures that each space feels familiar and relevant to those who will interact with it daily.

The first project under the initiative is Hewi Nad Al Sheba 4, a park developed by Dubai Future Foundation (DFF) and Dubai Municipality. The location was chosen for its walking-friendly vibe and the sense of community it already fosters.

This park is a model for future public spaces in Dubai. It includes Al Decha, a shaded area near the mosque where elders can gather over Arabic coffee. There’s also Al Saaha, a flexible indoor-outdoor venue for community events, workshops, and celebrations.

Finally, Al Yalsa is a family-friendly area with seating that overlooks a play zone for kids. That makes it perfect for parents to relax while keeping an eye on their children.

Dubai’s Public Spaces Get a New Look With Hewi Dubai

The Hewi Dubai Initiative has set out to weave Emirati fareej values into modern public parks. The first outpost, Hewi Nad Al Sheba 4, combines a mosque‑side coffee corner, a flexible events hall, and a family play zone—all shaped by local residents. In the months ahead, similar community parks will roll out across Dubai, each reflecting the traditions and needs of its neighborhood.
