Several European football leagues have introduced or continued measures to accommodate Muslim players observing Ramadan. These initiatives reflect a growing commitment to inclusivity in professional sports, though approaches vary across countries.

Premier League Allows In-Game Pauses for Fasting Players

Just wanted to thank the @premierleague as well as @CPFC , @vguaita13 all the Foxes for allowing me to break my fast tonight in the middle of the game. That's what makes football wonderful 🙏🏾✊🏾#WF3 #PourEux pic.twitter.com/d56o8A8ZGo

According to several publications including the BBC, the English Premier League has reinforced its practice of allowing brief pauses during evening matches to enable Muslim players to break their fast at sunset. This initiative, first introduced in previous seasons, has been well-received by players and clubs alike.

Former Arsenal and Manchester City defender Kolo Touré has previously spoken with The Sun about fasting during his career, emphasizing how it strengthened his resilience.

“It made me feel psychologically very strong, and as the month went on, I got even fitter,” he said in the interview. “I think it’s very easy now, with all the great support that clubs provide their players-it’s amazing.”

Belgian Pro League Extends Fasting-Friendly Match Pauses Into Second Season

The Belgian Pro League has also implemented in-game stoppages to allow Muslim players to break their fast. This initiative, which has been in place for two seasons, reflects the league’s commitment to respecting the religious practices of its diverse player base.

KNVB (Dutch Football Federation) Adopts Inclusive Sunset Breaks for Fasting Athletes

In the Netherlands, the Dutch Football Federation (KNVB) has extended its policy of permitting brief match interruptions after sunset so Muslim players can break their fast. This move aligns with the federation’s broader approach to inclusivity and religious accommodation.

    • Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah shared Ramadan-themed decorations with his daughter.

    • Real Madrid’s Arda Güler and Juventus’ Kenan Yıldız sent Ramadan greetings on social media.

    • Barcelona, AC Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain extended well wishes to their Muslim fans.

    • The Premier League’s Arabic-language social media page released a video compilation of Muslim players sharing Ramadan messages.

These developments highlight a broader shift toward religious inclusivity in football, though challenges remain in ensuring consistent accommodations across leagues.
