Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathy, announced on December 23, 2024, that the government will soon introduce regulations for Airbnb accommodations.

This decision aims to bring the global home-renting platform under the ministry’s supervision, ensuring that the properties listed meet safety and cleanliness standards while addressing the growing popularity of the platform among tourists.

    Guidelines for Hosts

According to Fathy, the new regulations will be “straightforward and easy” to follow.

First, the type of accommodation will be determined; serviced apartments, private rooms in shared homes, and Airbnb properties are all included in the accreditation system.

Second, a self-assessment system will be introduced for hosts, with random inspections to ensure compliance.

Finally, listings that meet the required standards of cleanliness and safety will receive official recognition, making them more appealing to travelers. Fathy emphasized that the aim isn’t to impose taxes, but there will be penalties for non-compliant hosts.

This initiative aims to improve the quality of accommodations available to visitors and increase the number of properties.

    Supporting Egypt’s Hospitality Growth

The regulation of Airbnb aligns with Egypt’s broader hospitality strategy. The government hopes to meet the increasing demand for tourist accommodations more efficiently.

This effort is part of the national goal of adding 250,000 hotel rooms to the country’s current 220,000 by 2028 to support the growing influx of tourists.

Egypt’s Recent Projects to Boost Tourism

Tourism remains one of Egypt’s most important industries, generating significant foreign currency for the economy.

In 2024, Egypt welcomed 15.3 million tourists, reflecting a 5% increase from the previous year. Building on this momentum, the government has set an ambitious target of attracting 30 million tourists annually by 2028.

Achieving this goal requires significant investments in expanding and modernizing the country’s tourism infrastructure.

    Investments in Hospitality and Infrastructure

To support its tourism goals, the Egyptian government approved a substantial initiative worth 50 billion EGP to construct and operate new hotels. This initiative will increase the number of available rooms to accommodate the growing number of visitors. Additionally, the development of transportation infrastructure is a key priority.

    Upgrading Cairo International Airport

One of the most significant projects in this plan is building a fourth Terminal at Cairo International Airport.

Once completed, the terminal will have the capacity to handle at least 30 million passengers per year, providing a seamless travel experience for both tourists and residents. This development highlights the government’s commitment to supporting tourism growth.

    Revamping the Giza Plateau

The Giza Plateau is undergoing a significant revamp to provide a more organized and eco-friendly experience for visitors. The project, set to be completed by February 2025, includes a revamped entrance, the exclusive use of eco-friendly electric vehicles for transportation, and better organization of services.

Plans are also being made to regulate and organize operators who work with animals, ensuring their livelihoods while maintaining high standards for visitor experiences.

By regulating Airbnb accommodations, expanding hotel capacity, and upgrading critical infrastructure such as Cairo International Airport and the Giza Plateau, Egypt is making significant strides to strengthen its position as a top global tourist destination.

These initiatives aim to enhance visitor satisfaction, ensure safety standards, and keep the country competitive in the international tourism market.
