The Saudi National Museum in Riyadh is the latest venue to host Christian Dior’s iconic “Designer of Dreams” exhibition, celebrating 75 years of haute couture.

Running from Nov. 21, 2024, to April 2, 2025, as part of Riyadh Season 2024, the exhibition offers a distinctive cultural experience blending European fashion with Middle Eastern influences.

A Global Journey Lands in Riyadh

Originally debuting at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, “Designer of Dreams” has traveled to major cities like London, Tokyo, and Brooklyn. Riyadh’s iteration, however, adds exclusive elements tailored specifically for its Saudi audience.

According to curator Florence Müller, “Each global venue offers a new chapter in the Dior story, but what makes Riyadh unique is how we’re incorporating elements that have never been exhibited before.”

These new additions include rare pieces acquired from auctions, further enhancing the exhibition’s narrative. Visitors can explore Dior’s origins, from Christian Dior’s early career as an art dealer to his revolutionary impact on the fashion world after founding the house in 1946.

At the heart of the Riyadh exhibition is the striking “Desert Beauty” room, which interprets Dior’s 1950s designs through a Middle Eastern lens.

Inspired by AlUla cliffs, this room features mineral-toned gowns that reflect the evolving light of the desert. One standout piece, a gown by Gianfranco Ferré, epitomizes the fusion of Western haute couture with desert-inspired artistry.

Nathalie Crinière, the scenographer behind the exhibition, transformed the museum’s grand spaces into immersive environments that highlight Saudi Arabia’s landscapes and cultural elements.

“The scale allowed us to create truly dramatic structures,” Crinière explained, referencing the museum’s soaring spaces that bring the Arabian desert indoors.

A Celebration of Art, Nature, and Fragrance

The exhibition also highlights Christian Dior’s inspirations, including art, travel, and nature. A gallery dedicated to Dior’s artistic roots showcases portraits of the house’s creative directors by artist Yan Pei-Ming.

Notably, the love for fragrance in the Middle East is honored through three distinct sections dedicated to Dior’s most iconic scents, such as Miss Dior, Dune, and J’adore. These displays not only celebrate perfume as an art form but also underscore the region’s cultural connection to luxury fragrances.

    Star-Studded Opening Night

The exhibition’s opening night was a glamorous affair attended by celebrities, influencers, and friends of the brand. Actor Bassel Khaiat, Lebanese influencer Karen Wazen, and Turkish actress Tuba Büyüküstün were among the notable guests who celebrated the event’s debut.

Their presence highlighted the timeless appeal of Dior and its resonance with global and Middle Eastern audiences alike.

Dior’s Dialogue with the Middle East

Curator Florence Müller emphasized that the exhibition represents more than just a fashion showcase. “This is a dialogue between European haute couture and Middle Eastern cultural traditions,” she said.

From Saudi artist Manal AlDowayan’s reinterpretation of the iconic Lady Dior bag to displays featuring brand ambassador and Saudi actress Aseel Omran, the exhibition pays homage to the kingdom’s rich heritage while illustrating fashion’s ability to transcend borders.

The Designer of Dreams exhibition not only marks a significant milestone for Dior but also reflects Saudi Arabia’s evolving cultural landscape. As Riyadh Season continues to host high-profile events, the exhibition serves as a testament to the kingdom’s growing role as a global cultural hub.
