The ongoing genocide in Gaza sparked worldwide support, marking an unexpected kind of solidarity. This showcased that, this time around, with the help of social media, the world wasn’t staying silent.
The support was so significant that it even included members of the Jewish community, unexpected allies during these uncertain times for Palestine. Their most recent bout of support was during a UN Security Council meeting in NYC when 36 Rabbis marched into the Security Council assembly room and held up black banners with the message: “Biden: the world says ceasefire.” That moment got global attention and began circulating across social media platforms.
This wasn’t the first moment that the Jewish community spoke up against the ongoing injustice. They’ve actually been active for many years in opposing Israeli policies toward Palestinians; they even clashed with pro-Israel groups in support of Palestine.
In the current genocide, the community is playing a key role in supporting the resistance by taking part in many protests. So far, these protests have taken place at Capitol Hill, a major train station in Chicago, and New York City’s Grand Central Station. They even organized a protest outside the Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington.
Within these massive communities are Jewish groups that include the Jewish Voice for Peace, known as “the largest progressive Jewish anti-Zionist organization in the world,” as well as IfNotNow, which is a group that was founded during the Hamas-Israel war in 2014.
Observing the Jewish community’s resistance against the ongoing events in Gaza and Palestine at large reflects that most of the world refuses to stay silent. Many perceive these happenings not just as an injustice but as a criminal offense.
