After spending a lifetime pursuing his doctorate degree, this Saudi guy left his job in a pharmaceutical company and started his own coffee business. Ziad Al-Ruqi thought that since the west has invaded the Arab world with its tasteless coffee which made people abandon their morning rituals as coffee drinkers.
“I chose the field of coffee-making because a lot of non-Arabs have entered this industry and killed the joy and essence of drinking coffee,” Ruqi said. “They made many Arabic coffee lovers refrain from drinking it because of bad taste and a lack of authenticity.”
Ruqi decided to name his project “Café Zad”, a word that was used back in the time when people ordered dates with their meals which indicates that it’s a full meal.
Ziad said that coffee stimulates nerves, protects against liver cancer and reduces muscle pain during exercise. He showcased his project in the 10th edition of the Hakaya Misk Festival. A Festival that aims at encouraging young Saudis to showcase their ideas and business models.
