    Intro

Google is quite well known for its special temporary alterations of its logo, known as Google Doodles. If you head to the internet’s most popular search engine right now, you’ll find out that they honored the Egyptian icon, Omar El Sherif, in the coolest way possible. Today, Tuesday 10th of April, marks what would’ve been the legendary actor’s 86th birthday. El Sherif passed away back in summer of 2015 leaving his fans all around the world in tears. Taking back a look at his unforgettable roles, we decided to share some of his best films with you in his loving memory.

    Sayedat Al Qasr – 1958

    Via Cairo Lens

Your all-time favorite power couple, Omar El Sherif and Faten Hamama, took it to the silver screen with this film as they played the roles of Sawsan, a poor orphan, and Adel, the rich guy who falls in love with her. Even though they get married, it doesn’t stop there.

    Ishae’t Hob – 1960

    Via Cairo Lens

I bet you’ve watched this movie over and over and you laughed every single line. We all know the lines by heart from “MAAMAAAA!” to “Keda Bardo ya Souna ya Khayen..”

    Lawrence of Arabia  – 1962

    Via Arab 48

Lawrence of Arabia is one of the films El Sherif is best known for internationally. This epic historical drama is based on the life of T. E. Lawrence, in which El Sherif plays the role of Sherif Ali, an unlikely ally to T.E. Lawrence.

    Doctor Zhivago  – 1965

    Via Smithsonian Magazine

Based on an Italian novel by Boris Pasternak, this film is about an old love, born in revolution and war, that reignites again in not-so-right circumstances.

    Genghis Khan – 1965

    Via Movie Pins

Another historical drama where El Sherif portrays life and conquests of the Mongol emperor, Genghis Khan.

    Funny Girl – 1968

    Via NY Blueprint

Nicky Arnstein in Funny Girl is one the roles El Sherif’s well known for as he co-stars along with Barbra Streisand. Barbra plays the role of Fanny Brice, a comedienne and singer, who tries to break into the showbiz.

    Che! – 1969

    Via Konbini

In this biographical American drama, Omar El Sherif plays the role of Marxist revolutionary Ernesto Che Guevara.

    Monsieur Ibrahim – 2003

    Via Rotten Tomatoes

This one’s a wonderful French film adaptation of a novel originally written by Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt. It’s about a young Jewish boy, Momo, and Ibrahim, the Muslim shopkeeper nearby, and how their friendship soon developed into a father-son relationship that’s stronger than ever.

    Hassan w Morkos – 2008

    Via Arab Scene

Even though the film deals with crucial religious issues and the unity of Muslims and Christians in Egypt, the wonderful duo, Omar El Sherif and Adel Imam, will make you laugh your head off.
