    50 & Beyond: 10 Essential Health Checks

Everyone knows that regular maintenance and checks are essential for technology, especially considering how much money people pump into their cars. However, most people overlook the need to have their own bodies checked over, especially after hitting 50. Even though these routine checks cost money and take up a little time, they could end up saving your life one day.

    Eye Tests

The eyes are important for allowing people to see, and eye tests tell a person whether they need to wear glasses or not. However, healthcare professionals can pick up so much more information from a simple eye test. For example, opticians are capable of detecting early signs of glaucoma, which is one of the leading causes of blindness.

    Hearing Tests

Stats presented by WebMD suggest that around 14% of adults in America between 45 and 64 suffer hearing loss, and this figure only increases with passing age. The reason for this is that the tiny hair-like cells inside the ear start to deteriorate, which may eventually lead to hearing issues. Additionally, if there’s a family history of hearing issues or you’re subject to loud noises, this may play a role.

You can schedule a hearing test by finding an audiologist near me. Depending on your results, you may need to invest in a high-quality hearing aid.

    Bowel Cancer Screening

Bowel cancer can strike at any age, but it’s more likely to occur in adults aged over 50. Therefore, it makes sense to get screened at least every two years. The tests are pretty straightforward and can be done at home. Although the screening doesn’t diagnose cancer, it provides healthcare providers with common signals. When bowel cancer is caught as early as possible, the survival rates are increased by more than 90%.

    Cholesterol Checks

Cholesterol is a harmful fat that can build up and eventually clog arteries, which leads to heart attacks, strokes, narrow arteries, and other cardiovascular medical conditions. To avoid facing these serious health conditions, you should have a regular cholesterol check once you’re over fifty. If your doctor finds that your cholesterol is too high, they will come up with a plan to help you get it under control.

    Breast Cancer Screening

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the US, according to the National Cancer Institute, which goes further to estimate that around 300,590 new cases are expected in 2023. This type of cancer doesn’t discriminate, but it’s more prevalent in post-menopausal women over the age of 50. Therefore, you should make sure you have regular mammograms, which is the name given to the breast cancer test.

    Prostate Cancer Tests

The Prostate Cancer Foundation indicates that 1 in 8 US men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in life, but the danger increases with age. When prostate cancer is caught early through regular checks, the chances of dying are fairly low. However, aggressive prostate cancer can sometimes disguise itself as confined prostate cancer, which unfortunately reduces the outlook.

    Blood Pressure Checks

One of the most common and easiest checks to carry out over 50 is a blood pressure check, which you can do comfortably at home. These non-invasive checks measure the flow of blood in the arteries.

If the blood pressure is too high, it can point to underlying issues that may cause heart attacks, kidney disease, and strokes. There is no list of high blood pressure symptoms to discuss because there’s no way to detect it without having a test carried out.

    Osteoporosis Scans

Old age will eventually cause the body to weaken, especially the bones, which can be accelerated by osteoporosis. This condition makes the bones weak to the point of fracturing, which isn’t ideal for getting on with life. There has been research carried out into the relationship between loss of estrogen and bone loss, which means women over 50 are also more likely to suffer from osteoporosis.

    Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screenings

This type of test examines the aorta to find out if there’s evidence of swelling. If there is, the AAA can lead to fatal consequences including bursting wide open. Therefore, it’s important to complete regular checks to catch the issue. Unlike other medical conditions on this list, AAA is most likely to target men.

    Cervical Cancer Tests

The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be around 13,960 new cervical cancer cases in 2023, which will come with a death toll of around 4,310. Although this is relatively low when you compare the numbers to the American population, there’s no point in tempting fate. Therefore, you should have a smear test at least every five years.

Turning 50 is a common threshold for encouraged testing for a range of medical conditions, and it’s not something that should be overlooked. Although there are a lot of tests outlined above, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
