Coming back for a second edition is the Hollywood Arab Film Festival, an event all about celebrating Arab cinema in the the US. To commemorate the occasion, we’ve chosen our top picks from this year’s lineup of powerful Arab films that deserve a watch.
Ghodwa – Tunisia
Set in a modern day Tunis, Ghodwa is a simple story following the aftermath of the Jasmine Revolution. It chronicles the reunion and subsequent relationship between Habib (Dhafer L’Abidine) and his son Ahmed (Ahmed Berrhouma). With it being L’Abidine’s directorial debut, it makes for an exciting watch during the festival.
19 B – Egypt
Egyptian director Ahmad Abdalla’s prize-winning drama explores the life of an elderly caretaker of an abandoned household played by Sayed Ragab whose life stands in stark contrast to the outside world of Egypt, its streets and people.
Jacir – Syria
The award winning refugee drama takes a look at the life of a Syrian refugee who faces the harsh realities of chasing the American dream on the streets of Memphis, Tennessee. It is Syrian director Waheed AlQawasmi’s first feature film, showcasing his narrative and directorial prowess.
Raven Song – Saudi Arabia
Saudi director Mohamed Al Salman’s first feature film takes a whimsical and quirky look at the life of Nasser, a man diagnosed with a brain tumor who is infatuated with a woman. Throughout the film he attempts to win her heart in the way he knows best, a song.
Harka – Tunisia
Taking a harrowing look into post-revolution Tunisia is Harka, US director Lotfy Nathan’s narrative debut. The film explores the life of Ali, a man living in poverty, trying to survive with his family. Carrying that burden, all he wishes for is to cross the Mediterranean and find work and a new life in Europe.
