Today is International Museum Day, a special occasion celebrated worldwide to honor the incredible role museums play in preserving history, culture, and art. Around the MENA region, several museums stand out not only for their impressive collections but also for how they connect us to the stories of the past and the present.

Let’s explore some of the region’s most exceptional museums and the treasures they proudly display!

Starting in Egypt, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) near the Pyramids of Giza offers an extraordinary journey into ancient civilization. While still in a soft opening phase, visitors can explore most of the museum’s stunning Main Galleries, including the Grand Hall and Grand Staircase, with over 60 artifacts.

Besides that, you can wander through twelve carefully curated halls that showcase Egypt’s rich history from prehistoric times to the Roman era. The full experience, including the Tutankhamun galleries, will open soon, making GEM a future must-visit for lovers of ancient civilization!

On Saadiyat Island, Louvre Abu Dhabi stands out with its unique design inspired by Arabic architecture. The museum’s large dome, made up of thousands of geometric stars, creates a shifting pattern of light throughout the day.

Inside, the collection includes over 700 artworks from various periods, including loans from French museums like the Louvre. The layout presents art from different cultures side by side, inviting you to explore connections across time and geography.

    3. National Museum of Qatar: Doha, Qatar

Besides that, you can check out the restored historic palace at the heart of the museum. There are also ongoing exhibitions, guided tours, and family activities to make your visit even more engaging.

On top of that, the palace itself is a beautiful example of Andalusian architecture, making your visit even more memorable. Plus, the museum also offers workshops and events that dive deeper into Morocco’s rich heritage.

When in Tunis, don’t miss the National Bardo Museum, which is a treasure trove of Tunisian history. Housed in a 19th-century palace, it’s home to the world’s largest mosaic collection, including the famous mosaic of poet Virgil.

You’ll also find Punic jewelry, Roman sarcophagi, and even a sunken Greek ship’s cargo recovered with help from Jacques Cousteau. From prehistoric artifacts to Islamic art, each room offers a snapshot of Tunisia’s rich past.

    MENA Museums that Stand Out

On International Museum Day, these remarkable institutions remind us why museums matter. Whether preserving ancient mosaics, showcasing architectural wonders, or telling local stories, each spot is a gateway to understanding the culture of its country. So, if you’re in the region or planning to visit, these gems are well worth the stop!
