5 Key Home Decorating Trends for 2020

Home décor and design is just like fashion. There may not be annual shows in New York, Paris or Milan showing off what’s going to be hot this season, but lifestyle magazines and home and decoration exhibitions set out the styles that the design-conscious homeowner will be looking to introduce. Many are in line with the desire to go back to the simpler things in life, but that doesn’t mean abandoning dramatic, eye-catching color – as we shall see.

    Open plan’s still in

There’s been a trend for knocking through for a long time now and the way in which it creates light and airy spaces means it’s still a very popular way to create the look and feel you want in your home. While structural work can be expensive, there are places you can find help and assistance on getting the most affordable and suitable deal for you. For example, you could visit an online broker service such as Trussle to compare mortgages and speak to an adviser who can look at your individual circumstances. Then, when the work’s complete, you can bask in the enjoyment of your newly re-modeled home.

    The abstract approach

Anyone familiar with the work of abstract artists like Mark Rothko and Howard Hodgkin will know how some simple combinations of colors can evoke real energy and excitement, with the latter’s collection of Indian paintings being a great example of this. Using big, bold blocks of color will achieve the same effect whether they’re on cushion covers, rugs, duvets or throws. But the secret is not to over-do it if you want to achieve the perfect design balance.

    Blue is the color

If there’s going to be a defining hue in 2020, this is it. In fact, it’s official with Pantone naming Classic Blue their official color of the year. Think more deep blue, the sort that we see in the sky at twilight, rather than its royal cousin and start planning where to use it. As a paint color, it’s going to be best for larger rooms – it will tend to make smaller areas seem a little closed in. Alternatively, just paint one accent wall or the ceiling in blue with the others in lighter, more subtle shades.

    Simplicity with structure

If 2019 was all about the cool, clean lines of Nordic design, then 2020 sees this progressing to a more comfortable, but equally sustainable style. The focus is on having fewer items of furniture that use natural materials and which come in a range of neutral shades. The overall impression to be created is one of calm organization with everything in its place.

    Bringing the outdoors in

In the increasingly unreliable climate we find ourselves in, it’s no wonder that there’s a move to create more controllable environments. So not only are floral-print fabrics and wallpapers on the rise, but expect to also see a trend for potted olive trees being used to brighten up kitchens and living areas.

So there you have them. Five great ways to bring your home totally up to date for 2020 if you really want to be at the cutting edge – and now it’s time to start the transformation.
