A few days ago, a horrific piece of news went viral on social media. Supposedly, a study was conducted by The Ministry of Housing and The Ministry of Irrigation showing that 34% of Egypt’s water is consumed by our irresponsible use of the shatafa.
Being the conservative and practical country we all know, according to the article, the dreadful results caused the government to ban use of the shatafa without a license starting December 2015. A license to do what exactly? We have no idea.
It was a hoax, but the panic attacks on social media were hilarious. We could think of nothing but what a shatafa-less existence would entail:
Your struggle would start with having to shower each time you use the toilet
But then your water bill would hit the roof
So you stop obsessively showering and toilet paper becomes your new best friend
You wouldn’t dare make an enemy at home, for everyone you live with would be your saviors in emergencies
This would be everyone’s worst nightmare
You would try every work around and solution you can think of
Portable shatafa companies would make it big and you would find them at every koshk
There would be a black market shatafa frenzy
Shatafas would find a new home in the Egyptian museum
There would be another revolution
Egyptians would leave en masse to countries that still have the shatafa
Social media will call it nothing but a childhood memory
