Egypt, the country of wonders and the crossroads of all cultures and civilizations, never ceases to astonish us with new artifacts uncovered every day! Archeologists are still making new findings and learning the truth about ancient pharaohs who ruled the world from this country. This is why it is critical to unearth as many artifacts as possible and understand more about this era, particularly about the royal families who governed Egypt throughout history.
In ancient Egypt, royal families were regarded as divine rulers. They controlled the use of substantial parts of Egypt’s territory and were also in charge of the people’s spiritual and economic well-being. In addition, they ruled by royal order, and their will was absolute. Today we proudly say that new discoveries have been made at Luxor, which has been dubbed the “world’s greatest open-air museum” due to the large number of antiques, relics, tombs, and even lost cities uncovered there by archaeologists.
During its current research season in Luxor, the Egyptian-German archaeological team led by Professor Hourig Sourouzian was successful in unearthing a new archaeological discovery. The team discovered a group of huge stones of two royal statues in the form of the Sphinx and statues for the goddess Sekhmet. This new discovery was made as the team was restoring Memnon’s sculptures and King Amenhotep III’s funeral temple, known as the “Temple of Millions of Years,” on the western mainland of Luxor.
The mission also unearthed the ruins of walls and columns decorated with ceremonial and ritual themes, according to Mustafa Waziri, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities. Parts of two huge limestone statues of King Amenhotep III in the guise of a Sphinx, wearing a mongoose headdress, a royal beard, and a broad chain around the neck were discovered among the unearthed artifacts. Waziri further stated that the team discovered three black granite busts of the goddess Sekhmet at the front of the open courtyard and the temple’s huge pillared hall.
Professor Sourouzian emphasized the significance of the discoveries, which prove that the procession road began between the temple’s third building and the courtyard of the columns. Thus, she stated that the mission’s preliminary research on the two sphinxes revealed that their length is roughly eight meters.
Thankfully, there are still many mysteries concerning ancient Egypt that we haven’t entirely deciphered. That being the case, we’re looking forward to new discoveries on Egyptian territory!
