Food Review: Butcher’s Burger, the Latest Addition to Zamalek’s Burger Craze

So after my yoga retreat weekend, I was itching for something on the non healthy side to sink my teeth into and this is when I remembered that I haven’t tried Butcher’s Burger yet. With the first branch open last year in Dokki, the people behind the concept took over the Maybe Two location on Abou El Feda Street and gave us some meat to look forward to.

The guy taking the order on the phone was very attentive and  polite, revising it and making sure he got everything right. The menu has a wide selection of burgers, some of which everyone is familiar with: mushrooms, bacon, BBQ sauce, cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayo, pickles, mustard, onions in all its different forms and pickles as toppings.

But every burger place has its signature mixes on the menu and for Butcher’s Burger it’s the Sunny Burger (organic Farm Egg – fried, sunny-side up – maple mayo, grilled onions, lettuce, crispy beef bacon), Pastrami Burger (pastrami, cheddar, grilled onions, mayo) and the Milano Burger (tomatoes, slices of fresh mozzarella cheese, pesto sauce, lettuce). Not only that, they also serve really good steaks, grilled chicken dishes and a variety of chicken sandwiches.  Their sides, sauces and additions are very simple yet neat and tasty.

The order arrived after 40 minutes from calling, so not too late, however a few items were missing which was a little disappointing. The order was a Butcher’s Original Cheeseburger, with a side of fries and pickles, deep fried mushrooms for starters with fresh salsa sauce, totaling approximately 72 LE, including a 5 LE delivery charge, so a bit on the costly side.

The fries were perfect, as in not oily at all, but unfortunately arrived cold and they brought coleslaw salad instead of the pickles.  The deep fried mushrooms had a light crumb coating, not too heavy, and there were six pieces (three halved mushrooms), but unfortunately also cold. The fresh salsa, however, was a very good pairing with the mushrooms, as opposed to the typical ranch or blue cheese dressing, and had a non thick, slightly watery consistency with a spicy but mild aftertaste.

The packaging overall is very simple, brown with the Butcher’s Burger logo. The burger came wrapped in branded paper with an extra silvery white wrap that reminded me of Arby’s and Hardee’s packaging.

The bun was the perfect consistency, chewy and fluffy at the same time with sesame on top (I’m not too much of a soft bun fan). The patty itself is a medium, well rounded, juicy wholesome size and they cooked it medium rare as ordered, which was great. Unfortunately, they still left the onions in there when I had asked for none and there was little cheese in the burger, which defies the whole point. But overall, it left me full till lunch time the following day.

I’ve tried many burgers in town, especially in Zamalek, and I’d have to say this one is definitely towards the top of the list. I would highly recommend trying it out, maybe even eating there, because the dine-in experience is usually better than that of the delivery (they have seating outdoors, which is great). Just stress on what they need to add or remove from you order, and hopefully they don’t disappoint you!
