There are trends that come to life on social media and end in mere days, then there are life-consuming trends that turn into habits and take your mind off life’s negativity and monotonicity. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is an online multiplayer battle royale game developed and published by PUBG Corporation and it’s the biggest thing in Egypt right now.
This game somehow turned into everyone’s obsession. It doesn’t end by being a phone game, Egyptians and Arabs managed to turn it into memes and GIFs. Alas, all good things come to an end and it seems that PUBG is getting the axe soon.

Last week, a 16-year-old Alexandrian student stabbed his chemistry teacher to death at her home, while impersonating his PUBG character. The incident led Ahmed Badawy, MP and head of the Communications and IT Committee, announced on ALYoum tv show on DMC channel that he plans on urging the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority to remove the game from Google Play.
While most of the game’s users are using it for fun and distraction, the MP believes it encourages violence amongst children and is just as dangerous as the previously viral game, the Blue Whale. Previously, a video surfaced on social media with the Islamic State’s song in the background, which led the government to believe that ISIS is using this game to brainwash players and reach out to them.
